Approach your workouts with a "live to train another day" attitude instead of a "train until you puke" attitude. Anyone can train past exhaustion once but training for the long haul is an art/skill. Always fall back to the idea that today's workout will either enhance or undermine your bigger performance picture.

The "train until you puke" attitude rarely (if ever) enhances your bigger performance picture. The approach you need for enduring success is one based on consistency.

One of the best I've seen at training for the big picture is @kobebryant. Everyone always wants to talk about his famous "blackout" workouts where he would push himself to near blackout back in his younger days. 
This is certainly impressive but what impressed me more is what I saw from him later in his career. He trained hard with ruthless consistency but always knew when to call it a day well before hitting exhaustion. It's this skilled training approach that led to extending his career to an unimaginable 20 years!
